Russian-style Waffle Cake

This recipe is for a Russian-style waffle cake, layered with caramelized sweetened condensed milk.
Ingredients
Waffles
- 6 eggs
- 1 cup white granulated sugar
- 200 g butter, melted
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
Caramel
- 1 can (390 g) sweetened condensed milk
- 150 g butter
Steps
Waffles
- Crack eggs into mixing bowl. Add sugar.
- Stir in flour gradually. Mix in melted butter gradually.
- Heat waffle iron per manufacturer's directions.
- Ladle enough batter to barely cover iron surface. Close. Cook about 2 minutes until medium-brown. Remove waffle.
- Repeat until batter is used up.
- Cool waffles.
Caramel
- Place sealed can of sweetened condensed milk in pot of water, covered by several inches.
- Boil, then simmer 2–3 hours. Keep can fully covered with water, adding more as needed.
- Remove cans from heat. Cool completely. Do not open hot can.
- Mix caramelized milk with butter.
- Place one waffle on sheet of foil or plastic wrap. Spread caramel on it. Top with another waffle. Repeat until waffles and caramel are used up.
- Wrap cake. Refrigerate several hours.
- Slice along waffle-iron lines. Serve.
Notes from the original
- If you want a big cake, double or triple the mixture. The size of the cake will vary depending on the amount of batter and the size of the waffle iron.
- The waffles should not be thick. A rectangular waffle-iron is recommended so that the waffles are rectangular and it is easy to put the cake together.
